The Saudi Arabian Referees’ Committee has officially banned Turkish referee Halil Umut Meler from officiating future matches in the Saudi Pro League, following what it called “major errors” during a recent high-profile game between Al-Hilal and Al-Shabab.
“We Won’t Work With Him Again”
Speaking to the Saudi press, committee head Manuel Navarro confirmed the decision:
“We won’t work with a referee again if he commits a major error during a game. Halil Umut Meler will not be invited to any of our games. Errors occurred that impacted the outcome of the Al-Hilal vs. Al-Shabab match.”
During the contentious match, Meler issued red cards to Kalidou Koulibaly of Al Hilal and Nader Abdullah Al Sharari of Al Shabab, while also disallowing a goal scored by Al Shabab. Following their 2-1 defeat, Al Shabab formally lodged a complaint against the referee.
Meler’s Controversial Track Record
This is not the first time Meler has attracted attention for controversial incidents. In December 2023, he made international headlines after being physically assaulted by Ankaragücü President Faruk Koca following a Turkish Süper Lig match against Rizespor.
The shocking attack occurred after a 97th-minute equalizer by Rizespor. As the final whistle blew, Koca stormed the pitch and punched Meler in the face, with others kicking him after he fell. The violent incident prompted a temporary suspension of all Turkish football leagues and widespread condemnation from football bodies and political leaders.
