Turkish football is enjoying one of its strongest periods in years, and Galatasaray have become the symbol of that resurgence.

A new generation of stars, led by Arda Güler and Kenan Yıldız, helped Turkey reach the quarter-finals of Euro 2024 and push toward qualification for its first World Cup since 2002. At club level, Galatasaray are trying to show that Turkish teams can once again compete with Europe’s elite.

Despite winning 26 Turkish league titles and dominating domestically in recent years, Galatasaray had not reached the Champions League knockout rounds since the 2013–14 season. Under manager Okan Buruk, that drought appears close to ending.

Stronger Squad, Bigger Ambitions

Galatasaray have invested heavily to raise their European profile. The club secured the permanent signing of Victor Osimhen and added experienced stars such as Leroy Sané and İlkay Gündoğan.

According to assistant coach Ismael García, the arrival of players in their prime demonstrates that Turkey is no longer viewed merely as a destination for aging stars.

A decade ago, Turkish clubs often attracted famous players nearing retirement. Today, players like Osimhen, Sané, and younger talents choosing Turkish clubs suggest the league’s reputation is improving.

Turkish Football’s Progress

Turkey’s national team has climbed significantly in the FIFA rankings, while the Süper Lig has improved its standing in UEFA’s coefficient rankings. The growth of domestic clubs is increasingly benefiting the national side.

However, challenges remain. Turkish football continues to battle issues related to governance, refereeing controversies, crowd violence, and betting scandals. Many within the game believe the country’s footballing potential is still greater than what has been achieved so far.

Galatasaray as European Disruptors

Recent results show Galatasaray are capable of troubling Europe’s biggest clubs. In recent Champions League campaigns they have recorded notable victories against teams such as:

  • Manchester United
  • Liverpool
  • Ajax
  • Tottenham Hotspur

These performances have strengthened belief inside the club that they can compete with the continent’s elite rather than simply participate.

The Manchester City Test

The trip to face Manchester City represents another opportunity to prove that Turkish football’s rise is real.

While City are among Europe’s strongest teams under Pep Guardiola, Galatasaray arrive with confidence, a talented squad, and less pressure than their opponents.

For Manchester City, the match is about securing the best possible Champions League position.

For Galatasaray, it is about something bigger: demonstrating that both the club and Turkish football have returned to the European stage as serious contenders.
